Chunky red ewelamb with a bald face and white hind socks. Very strong for growth and milk, and modest in prolificacy. Sired by a framey, dark chocolate ram from Birch Cove Farm (David Coplen, Missouri). Dam traces to Thistle Grove Farm (John Bare DVM, Iowa) and Misty River Farm (Mary Bakko, Moses Lake, now retired).

Dam traces to Birch Cove Farm (David Coplen, Missouri) and Misty River Farm (Mary Bakko, Moses Lake, now retired).

Really nice-sized red roan ram lamb. Really nice EBVs across the board.  He should throw really strong growing butcher lambs as well as keeper replacement ewes. He is NSIP Stud Certified.

This ram’s sire is a very strong ram from David Coplen (Birch Cove Farm, Missouri). This sire has a Texel thee generations back. David’s crossing-in benefits us with heterosis and the double-muscling gene from Texels. The tradeoff is some setback in shedding, but this is easily recovered from in subsequent generations.  His sire is an upgrade, a B coat, but most of his offspring are good shedders; and this ram lamb can be fully registered.  His maternal grandsire is from Thistle Grove Farm (Dr. John Bare, DVM in Iowa), a dedicated grass-fed NSIP flock.

There is a correlation there, for sure; dams that keep their lambs close feed them more and they gain more weight, and all of this maternal and bonding behavior is genetic. Really nice-sized white ram lamb. Very strong growth and milk scores, and moderate on prolificacy and survival. He should throw really strong growing butcher lambs, and replacement daughters that milk well but don’t often go to extremes with triplets.

This ram’s sire is a very strong ram from David Coplen (Birch Cove Farm, Missouri). This sire has a Texel thee generations back. David’s crossing-in benefits us with heterosis and the double-muscling gene from Texels. The tradeoff is some setback in shedding, but this is easily recovered from in subsequent generations. Thus, I haven’t upgrade the sire yet (maybe this year if he sheds adequately, or maybe never); and this lamb will be recorded, and can be upgraded next year to 100% purebred upon hair coat inspection. We in the PNW have been lucky to borrow a ram from the USDA Research Station in Booneville, AR; Dr. Joan Burke is lending him to our region so that we can get better linkage to the “cluster” of flocks in the Midwest/South. He’s been on a tour through Idaho and Oregon, and made a stop here last winter to be used in my flock, and he’s headed East now. Take advantage of some great out-of-state genetics!

His dam traces back Misty River Farm (Mary Bakko, Moses Lake, now retired) and some KRK genetics (Karen Kenagy, OR). This guy is very strong in growth, milk and survival, more modest on prolifacy. He’ll produce good-growing butcher lambs and replacement ewes that have great milk and survival traits, but hopefully will be a little lower on the twin-triplet scale, for those who despise multi births.

Dam traces to  Misty River Farm (Mary Bakko, Moses Lake, now retired) and Just Plain Sheep (Jody Ouradnik, now retired). Really good growth, milk and survival, but modest on prolificacy. This guy will throw great butcher lambs and replacement ewes if you want to steer clear of triplets.

He doesn’t have stellar EBVs, but I know some homesteaders just want a cool looking ram, if so, this is your guy!
