Offered for sale as a purebred, registered Katahdin ewe $275

White 6-year old ewe with the East Coast body style and curly coat type (but sheds well). Modest growth and milk EBVs, but very high prolificacy: she had quads this year, which is extremely rare or me. Lambing record starting as a yearling: 1/1, 2/2, 2/1, 2/2, 3/2, 4/1, 4/2. Sire from Thistle Grove Farm (John Bare, DVM, Iowa), dam out of local genetics and White Post Farm (East Coast, now retired), and the old Bert Martineau line.

This ewe has had some wanderin’ lambs in past years, and she can get confused about what’s hers while she’s delivering, so I have ended up orphan rearing a couple, and often have to intervene to make sure she bonds. This is somewhat unusual for such maternal Kats, but I work with it because she’s so productive. In 2023 she had quads, I took two to raise and she accidentally laid on one teeny one, so only raised one. This year she also had quads, and I just let them be mob-reared in the barn. So she nursed 2-3 of them, and some or all also used the teat bucket and also bummed off every ewe they can! They look great.

Despite her having lower growth scores, her lambs always grow like gangbusters; and this body type with the short coat always really shows off the muscling, they are very framey. I like this ewe but am selling her because her index is starting to be on my lower end. She’ll be a good middle aged mama for a  starter flock and should have many more years left to lamb. Really pretty, well-put-together white ewe. She birthed a stillborn single this spring. She was such a dedicated  mother that for hours, she pawed and worked at that lamb to get it up until she wore the hair off of it! She was in great distress when I finally took it away. I had a weak lamb in the barn from another mother that I grafted onto her, and she took it with ease. She is extremely maternal and remained very protective of her adopted lamb. Pedigree is a blend of Birch Cove (David Coplen, Missouri), Misty River (Mary Bakko, now retired), On the Lamb Farm (Arlington) and Thistle Grove Farm (John Bare, DVM, Iowa). She was open last year, I usually have one or two ewes that miss a season but go on to lamb normally in the future, as she seems to have done. She’s three, heading into her most productive years, and she lambed as a yearling, which is a plus. Her EBVs are good for growth and milk, and she’s taken a bit of a hit on NLB both for her own sake, and because her sire is low. But if she’s fed well, she will likely mostly be a twinner in the future.

There are plenty of triplets in her family, though, so it is not out of the question. A big-framed white ewe with a clean-shedding hair coat. Very strong growth EBVs and good milk; though her prolificacy is on the lower-end, from both her pedigree, and her own variability of singles, twins and triplets. I’ve kept her this long to leverage her good growth and milk scores, but it’s time to let her contribute her big-frame genetics to someone else’s farm. Sire is from local KRK genetics, dam is from Aspen Mountain Farm (Aileen Scott, Montana). Lambing record starting as a yearling: 1/1, 1/1, 2/2, 2/2, 3/3, 1/1, 2/2.

She had twins this year, but I can see that one side of her udder has become unproductive, probably from subclinical mastitis in a past year. One of her lambs was not thriving by week three, so I transitioned him to the bottle and sold him as a grower. She’s got a remaining ram lamb at side (sired by BC H 974) that’s growing well, a very flashy dark chocolate lamb with long white socks and tail. I’ll get a pic of him soon! I have priced her as a pet/cull ewe price. She can continue to be bred, but new owner will have to supplement the lambs in years where she twins. The pair is priced at $425 before the end of June. Ewe comes with registration cert, ram lamb is commercial (or registration paperwork for $100 additional).
